Editor\u2019s Note:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>This post is part of a series of\u00a0<\/em>Helping Hands<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0stories authored by School of Pharmacy faculty, staff, students, trainees, and alumni who stepped up to assist their family and friends, colleagues, and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/em><\/p>\n

During the\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0pandemic,\u00a0the School of Pharmacy\u2019s Peter Lamy Center on Drug Therapy and Aging<\/a><\/strong> has continued to support\u00a0its\u00a0neighbors in West Baltimore. Unfortunately,\u00a0during\u00a0this unprecedented time,\u00a0instructors and students in the\u00a0School\u2019s Aging in Place interprofessional course cannot physically visit\u00a0the\u00a0housing sites that participate in the course. Prior to COVID-19\u00a0and the resulting self-distancing, quarantine, and stay at home orders, students in the course were able to go out into\u00a0the\u00a0community to work one-on-one with older residents in West Baltimore.\u00a0They would complete screenings, such as blood pressure, high risk medications, and falls, as well as provide education on ways to stay healthy and active. Throughout this course, the\u00a0students would give community residents small prizes, including sanitary items, snacks, and pamphlets.<\/p>\n

As a result of its recent\u00a0inability to be physically present in\u00a0the\u00a0community,\u00a0the\u00a0Lamy Center had many extra supplies and wanted to find new ways to support its older adult neighbors. The\u00a0Lamy Center stuffed individualized bags with personal hygiene items such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, paper towels, and toilet paper; snacks like granola bars and crackers; and educational pamphlets on exercise and medication safety. We reached out to\u00a0the\u00a0UMB Community Engagement Center (CEC), under\u00a0the\u00a0leadership of Tyrone Roper, MSW, to deliver\u00a0the\u00a0items.<\/p>\n

The bags were distributed to 50 older adults in\u00a0the\u00a0West Baltimore community to let\u00a0them know we are here for\u00a0them\u00a0during\u00a0these difficult times. This effort was in addition to\u00a0ongoing one-on-one outreach for some of our neighbors in Mount Clare, made possible through\u00a0student support and the leadership of Nicole Brandt, PharmD, MBA, BCPP, BCGP, FASCP<\/strong>, professor of pharmacy practice and science and executive director of the Lamy Center; Daniel Mansour, PharmD, BCGP, FASCP, interprofessional clinical coordinator for the Lamy Center; and Barbara Resnick, PhD, RN, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP, professor of organizational systems and adult health and co-director of the Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan Organized Research Center at the School of Nursing.<\/p>\n

“What an amazing gesture of kindness from\u00a0the\u00a0School of Pharmacy\u2019s Lamy Center to donate care packages for the elderly living in southwest Baltimore,\u201d says Roper.\u00a0\u201cTheir contribution helped UMB\u2019s Community Engagement Center reach more people in need of support\u00a0during\u00a0this difficult time.”<\/p>\n

He adds, “In addition to delivering care packages, we were able to share with more people\u00a0the\u00a0importance of social distancing and wearing a mask when out in public. I am very appreciative for\u00a0the\u00a0partnership with\u00a0the\u00a0School of Pharmacy and the Lamy Center.
