Reflections from an Experiential Learning Preceptor

Written By: Tuan Huynh, PharmD, clinical pharmacy manager and preceptor coordinator at Weis Pharmacy

One of my favorite moments from 2021 was having the opportunity to precept, educate, and work alongside talented pharmacy students who showed an eagerness to learn, a compassion for patient care, and clinical curiosity to grow and build their skillsets.

I want to share my experience with three exemplary pharmacy students from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy that we hosted at Weis Markets Pharmacy.

Sydney Hajimirsadeghi (pictured in left photo) rotated with me in 2020 for her third-year Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience, and Lauren Correia (pictured in right photo with me) and Jamie Rickey (pictured in middle photo with me) rotated with me in 2021 for their fourth-year Advanced Pharmacy Practice Exerience Community Practice Rotation.

These three exemplary students modeled genuine patient care interactions during their rotations. As a hybrid Community-Medication Therapy Management (MTM) practice site, they not only learned safe and appropriate medication dispensing processes but also performed high-level clinical services including onsite and telehealth comprehensive medication reviews (CMRs) and targeted intervention programs (TIPs) to patients in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. They always came prepared for all types of learning situations, owned their learning experience, and stretched their own talents.

These three students not only broke the ceiling of their rotation, but they reached for what was beyond and collectively, they provided more than 110 CMRs for complex patients through OutcomesMTM. Way to go!

It was a privilege to host them but also humbling to have them reach out to me and my co-preceptor and clinical pharmacy manager and lead, Elaine Pranski, PharmD, for letters of recommendation as they pursue opportunities in residency programs. I am not only confident in their abilities but know they will make great additions to any organization.
