Last semester, student pharmacist Chizimuzo Nwokike (Class of 2028) participated in the highly selective, two-day Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)-Gilead Pharmacy Student Shadowing Program, which took place at Gilead’s headquarters in Foster City, Calif.

Early in September, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Gilead Sciences in California as part of the 2025 AMCP-Gilead Pharmacy Student Program. It was a great learning experience that deepened my understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and the many ways pharmacists contribute to advancing patient care.

Understanding the Purpose of the Program

From my perspective, the purpose of the program was to give student pharmacists an inside look at how companies like Gilead integrate science, innovation, and collaboration to improve global health. We explored how managed care principles intersect with research and development to ensure patients have access to safe, effective, and affordable therapies.

Exploring the Intersections of Science, Innovation, and Access

Throughout the program, we engaged in interactive sessions with professionals from departments such as medical affairs, market access, regulatory affairs, and clinical development. We also learned about Gilead’s mission-driven approach to advancing treatments in areas like HIV, oncology, and liver disease. One of the most memorable moments for me was learning how cross-functional collaboration drives innovation and brings life-changing therapies to patients worldwide.

Lessons in Collaboration and Career Pathways

This experience taught me the importance of teamwork across disciplines, the power of aligning purpose with patient care, and the value of exploring non-traditional pharmacy paths that shape health care on a broader scale. I was especially surprised by how approachable and passionate the professionals at Gilead were, each eager to share their journeys and insights.

I would highly recommend this program to other pharmacy students – it’s an inspiring opportunity that broadens your perspective and reaffirms the vital role of pharmacists in improving health outcomes.
