MS in Regulatory Science Program Celebrates Class of 2019

Written By: James Polli, PhD, the Shangraw/Noxell Endowed Chair in Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics

Faculty and staff in the Master of Science and Graduate Certificate in Regulatory Science programs at the School of Pharmacy were delighted to celebrate the recent graduation of the 29 working professionals enrolled in the programs’ Class of 2019. Graduates included 26 individuals who received the MS in Regulatory Science, and three who completed the post-baccalaureate certificate in regulatory science.

The programs are offered exclusively online, but many graduates traveled to Pharmacy Hall from near and far to attend the in-person convocation celebration on May 16, including the program’s first graduate from China.

A Time to Celebrate

Rear Admiral Denise Hinton, BSN, MS, chief scientist for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), delivered the keynote address for the ceremony. “We are in the midst of a scientific revolution that is changing and expanding the opportunities we have to transform the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases. The program you are graduating from today is a shining example of the kind of education that did not exist until just a few years ago – a program that makes it possible for students like yourselves to be exposed to the many questions and challenges presented by new science and emerging technologies that are not necessarily offered in the course of traditional training,” she said.

Graduating student Christina Thompson, MSc, consumer safety officer at the FDA, also provided a message on behalf of the Class of 2019. Two students – Danielle Sewell and Rachel Tienhaara – were presented with awards for Outstanding Performance in Regulatory Science during the ceremony.

Students who enroll in the Master of Science and Graduate Certificate in Regulatory Science programs typically have eight years of experience in drug and biologics development or regulatory assessment. I continue to be amazed at how important completing this degree program is to these working professionals and their families. Convocation is a wonderful celebration for our students, and it was a joy to be able to celebrate with them.
